About the Local Area

Location

Set within the the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Collaton Park is a stone’s throw away from the charming villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo.

Transport

The wonderful village of Newton Ferrers is around 1.5 miles away and can be reached on foot, by bike or by car. Noss Mayo (it’s equally beautiful sister village) is around 2 miles away while Yealmpton and Brixton are around 3 miles away. Plymstock and Plymouth are that bit further afield (6.5 and 8.5 miles respectively) and are home to a wider range of amenities while the city of Exeter and nearby town of Taunton can be reached in around an hour.

The 94 bus which currently runs from Plymouth to Noss Mayo (stopping in Plymstock, Elburton, Brixton, Yealmpton, Holbeton, Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo) will eventually service the development, providing easy access to various places locally. It is due to increase the frequency in which it runs to approximately 10 times per day. For those wishing to travel further afield, Plymouth train station is around 6.5 miles away providing easy access to Exeter, Taunton and Bristol Temple Meads.

Despite its rural location, Collaton Park is well connected to a variety of means of travel, giving that country lifestyle but with nearby towns and cities all within easy reach.

Education

There are plenty of great educational facilities nearby, the closest being Newton Ferrers C of E Primary School at only 1.5 miles away (rated “good” by OFSTED in 2024). Other primary schools in the area include Yealmpton Primary (2.6 miles) rated Good by OFSTED in June 2023, and Plymstock School (5.8 miles) also rated Good by OFSTED the same year.

For secondary school age pupils, Plymouth High School for Girls is 8.4 miles away while Devonport Highschool for Girls and Devonport High School for Boys are 13 and 10 miles away respectively.

For Private Schools, the reputable Plymouth College Prep School and Plymouth College (a day school and boarding school) can be reached in under 30 minutes.

There are a range of special schools nearby such as Longcause Community Special School, Cann Bridge School and Courtlands School.

For younger children, Newton Ferrers C of E Primary School has a pre school, while the nearby village of Brixton is home to Ladybirds Nursery.

Health

The Yealm Medical Centre is the closest GP surgery to the development and offers a range of services, including midwifery appointments just 2.3 miles away in Yealmpton. The highly regarded Derriford Hospital in Plymouth is 14 miles away.

There are a number of dental practices locally such as the Yealmpton Dental Practice (6 minutes away), Bupa and Plymstock Dental Clinic in Plymstock (15 minutes away) and Ivybridge Dental Centre (around 18 minutes away).

Shopping & Leisure

Naturally the region is perfect for outdoor life with excellent opportunities for walking and cycling including the beautiful South West Coastal Path, among many others. There are a handful of local pubs and eateries serving fresh and local produce (including The Dolphin Inn in Newton Ferrers and The Ship Inn and the Swan in its equally beautiful sister village, Noss Mayo) that make for a great place to take a rest after a day on the water. Yealm Yacht Club is a vibrant part of the local community and hosts a number of social events all year round, from themed evenings and live music to engaging talks and events.

The Yealm Regatta is a local tradition, taking place over the summer with a number of competitions and the infamous regatta dance. What started as a spirited competition among fishermen is now a vibrant festival that brings together the entire community.

For activities slightly further afield, the city of Plymouth is a short drive away and is home to a number of places to eat and drink, as well as the ever popular Drake Circus, a large undercover shopping centre filled with extensive retail and leisure facilities.
